Lombard Street

Lombard Street is a popular east west street in the city of San Francisco in California known for its steep one block section with eight hairpin turns. The street is named after Lombard Street in Philadelphia and famous residents include Rowena Meeks Abdy, a California impressionist painter.

Cable car stops at the top of the block while the street also offers exquisite views of San Francisco and the bay. The famous crooked road in San Francisco features Victorian homes, stunningly beautiful flowers, incredible views and when the flowers are in bloom, the street is a veritable potpourri of colours.

The street is located in the upscale Russian neighbourhood with scenic red brick pavement and lovingly tended flower beds. The Lombard Street thrills of skating has been featured in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game while there has also been a game where visitors brought plastic toy tricycles for the annual Bring Your Own Big Wheel race.

The switch back design was necessary to reduce the natural grade of the hill as the street would have been too steep to climb for the vehicles. The place is a popular tourist spot and claimed as the most crooked street in the world.
